Espen Cook (b. 1991 in Bergen, Norway) is a visual artist currently working and living in Hong Kong. He attended Bergen School of Arts (KIB) from 2010-2012.

While mainly focusing on painting, he also experiments with other mediums and materials; constantly gathering impressions and drawing inspiration from different people and cultures.

His past two exhibitions (2015, Unknown Quantum Connection and 2016, Road to Nowhere) were heavily influenced by his surroundings in both Songzhuang and Hong Kong, China as well as philosophical and existential questions regarding life and politics. His works are an exploration of life — questioning, enhancing, copying, re-using familiar language and symbols, taking old ideas and making them anew.

Cook's practice relates to Eastern traditional techniques and materials, Western contemporary culture, as well as the simplicity of Scandinavian minimalism. His works are simple yet contains depth and details whether being in the texture and layers of the paint or the subject matter and content of the paintings.

His mode of work is akin to that of a scientist; the material being collected, processed and finally presented, each step as important as the next. Each exhibition and each series of paintings, sculpture or video has its own unique language and identity.

We anticipate his next exhibition will be held in April 2017.
